Death of Sridevi, Bollywood Legend

On Saturday, February 24th, Indian actress Sridevi Kapoor drowned in her hotel bathtub after losing consciousness (Wire). The hotel was in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where Sridevi was to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding (Hindustan Times). While several media outlets are reporting cardiac arrest as the cause of her death, there has been no confirmation yet (AP). Her brother Sanjay Kapoor said, “We are completely shocked. She had no history of a heart attack” (Hindustan Times).

Two Dubai police officials added, on the condition of anonymity, that Sridevi was under the influence of alcohol when she died (AP). Sridevi was a film legend in Bollywood, with a career spanning five decades and 300 films (Reuters). In 2013, she received the Padma Shri award, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor (Reuters). Sridevi’s death brought tributes from Bollywood stars, celebrities and Prime Minister Narendra Modi (Reuters).
