Angela Merkel to Step Down in 2021

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced she will end her term as Chancellor in 2021 (BBC). Merkel stated, “I will not be seeking any political post after my term ends” (BBC). Merkel is stepping down due to poor performance within her party, of which she takes “full responsibility” (BBC). Merkel further stated, “As chancellor and leader of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) I’m politically responsible for everything, for successes and for failures” (BBC). Merkel is in her fourth term as Chancellor of Germany (AP).

Merkel stated even though she was a leader with “passion and dedication”, that “today it is time to start a new chapter” (AP). She will relinquish her position as party leader of the CDU in December (AP). Merkel previously said over the years that the party leader should be chancellor (AP). Candidates for the position of party leader of the CDU are Annegret- Kramp-Karrenbauer the general secretary of the CDU and Health Minister Jens Spahn (AP). Former parliamentary leader of the CDU, Friedrich Merz, is also said to run for party leader (Reuters). Chancellor Merkel’s two issues of focus, for the remainder of her time in office, will be Brexit and U.S- Russia relations (Independent). Merkel will not formally support any of the candidates for party leader (Independent).
