Ambassador Ira Shapiro
America vs. the World: The Senate's Role in Trade Policy and National Security
Ambassador Shapiro served as General Counsel to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and played a central role in the negotiation and legislative approval of NAFTA and later the multi-lateral Uruguay round that created the World Trade Organization. He then served as chief U.S. trade negotiator between the U.S. and both Japan and Canada, with ambassadorial rank, and he led a complete series of major bilateral trade agreements with these major U.S. trading partners.
