North Korean state media warned on Tuesday of a nuclear attack on the United States at any sign of instigation (Reuters). This statement came out after a U.S. Navy strike group deployed toward the western pacific (Reuters). President Trump referred to this force as an ‘armada’ (Reuters). The North Korean Foreign Ministry has said the deployment shows “reckless moves for invading” (BBC). U.S. Pacific Command has stated that the naval deployment is aimed at maintaining readiness in the region (BBC). U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the deployment was not tied to a specific event but “a matter of prudence” (Reuters).

The North Korean Foreign Ministry official also commented in response to the U.S. airstrikes in Syria last week (AP). The official called the airstrikes “absolutely unpardonable” and said the strike proves that North Korea’s nuclear weapons are justified (AP). Further, the North Korean Foreign Ministry released a statement saying, “The U.S. naval deployment showed North Korea had been right to develop nuclear weapons capability for use in self-defense or in a pre-emptive strike” (BBC).
