Saudi Defense Ministry Official Arrested on Bribery Charges

On Tuesday, the Saudi Press Agency reported the arrest of a Saudi Defense Ministry official on charges of bribery (Reuters). The agency further revealed that the official accepted $267,000 in bribe money and abused his position (WP). Prosecutors on the case stated that the bribe was over a contract between the Defense Ministry and a private company (WP). The SPA did not name the accused official in order to protect the government’s integrity (EA).

The official confessed to accepting the bribe during interrogation and said two other people were involved in the same crime (Reuters). Saudi authorities questioned the two people suspected and arrested them (EA). Saudi Attorney General Sheikh Saud bin Abdullah al-Muajab called the bribery plot a “betrayal of trust” (WP). Public Prosecution reaffirmed in a statement a determination to track anyone who misuses public money and violates the integrity of public office (EA).
