In light of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Republic of Ireland’s prime minister Leo Varadkar re-registered as a medical practitioner. Last Sunday Varadkar announced he will work one shift a week (Reuters). He offered his services to the Ireland Health Service Executive (HSE) after registering in March (Reuters). Varadkar previously worked as a doctor for seven years before his political career (Reuters).
To combat the virus amid Ireland’s struggling health service, Health Minister Simon Harris launched a recruitment drive, “Be on Call for Ireland.” The initiative is encouraging ex-health workers like the prime minister to register for health care work (Irish Times). HSE received more than 70,000 responses of people interested in working. As of Monday, Ireland has 158 COVID-19 related deaths (BBC).
