Five rockets struck Bagram airfield in Afghanistan on Thursday with no casualties reported, according to the NATO-led force in Afghanistan (Reuters). ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes weeks after a deal between the Taliban and the United States (Al Jazeera). The Afghan affiliate of ISIS, the Islamic State Khorasan, was not included in the pact (The Hill). A Taliban spokesman tweeted that his group was not responsible for the attack (Reuters).
The official twitter account for Operation Resolute Support, the NATO-led mission, tweeted that the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces were investigating the incident (The Hill). The Islamic State released a statement on social media that their fighters “targeted a helicopter landing pad” at Bagram airfield (Reuters). Physical damage to the base is unclear (The Hill). The Afghan government freed 100 Taliban prisoners from a jail near the base on Wednesday, with 100 scheduled to be released on Thursday (Al Jazeera).
