Protests rocked Mathare, a settlement in Nairobi, Kenya, after police killed a homeless man, James Mureithi, for violating the dusk-to-dawn curfew (AP News). Imposed on March 27th, Kenyan leaders introduced the curfew to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (Human Rights Watch). In the first ten days of the curfew alone, the police killed at least six people (Human Rights Watch). Police officers also beat and shot people leaving markets and returning home from work before the start of the daily curfew (Human Rights Watch).
According to local business owner, Emily Nyambura, police enforce the curfew using tear gas and beatings with no prior warning (Al Jazeera). Nyambura claims that many individuals are unaware of the curfew due to lack of access to television and radio sources (Al Jazeera). While President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued a general apology for the violence, he has not taken action to stop the police violence (Human Rights Watch). According to activist Boniface Mwangi, police officers have killed at least nineteen people while enforcing the curfew, all from low-income areas (AP News).
