Ian’s Outlaw Ocean series was originally published in The New York Times, where he has been an investigative reporter for over two decades. During his career, Ian has won a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News, a George Polk Award for Foreign Reporting, and his work has been nominated for an Emmy Award. The Outlaw Ocean reporting, almost all done offshore, took Ian across 5 seas and 14 countries. It resulted in 8 front-page stories in The New York Times and a book. Hear firsthand about Ian’s experiences at sea witnessing human trafficking and other atrocities on fishing vessels.

Human Trafficking in the Fishing Industry II: Reporting by DOJ’s Taskforce on Human Trafficking

The problem of forced labor on fishing vessels has emerged as an especially difficult challenge to policymakers, enforcement officials, and worker advocates. This form of human trafficking is particularly challenging to eradicate due in part to the physical isolation of those workplaces and the complex legal and jurisdictional issues on the high seas. Hear from Karen Stauss, Senior Policy Counsel with the Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit at the Department of Justice about the government’s commitment to confronting the problem of forced labor on vishing vessels. Karen will highlight findings from a new report issued by the Task Force on Human Trafficking in Fishing in International Waters.

Conscious Consumers: Customs and Border Protection’s Role in Preventing Importation of Goods Made with Forced Labor

Each one of us is touched by modern slavery in our everyday lives through the purchases that we make and the commodities we consume. Join us for a discussion about forced labor in global supply chains and learn how to be a more conscious consumer. Therese Randazzo, Director of the Forced Labor Division, Office of Trade, US Customs and Border Protection, will share the steps being taken to identify imports produced by forced labor and stop them from entering the country.
